We woke up in France!
Jesse slept soooooooo good in this bed. Today was a “Rest Day” (we’ve planned a couple of these after big travel days). We slept in late and watched soccer, then Jesse and the kids walked up to the old walled city (there’s a steep, narrow secret staircase just around the corner from our place. We went to a Boulangerie (bakery) for breakfast. We ate on a terrace and then went back into the bakery to get croissants for tomorrow’s breakfast, and the sweet lady behind the counter tucked two baguettes in my bag and said with a wink, in French, “For breakfast tomorrow.”
Now today’s high was 103F, and it felt HOT in the sun. So we returned home to drop off the kids, then Sean and I went on an exploratory walk to find an Épicerie (grocery) and get lunch items. We loved the little neighborhood at the base of the old walled city, and found a great little spot to buy Roquefort, triple cream cheese, strawberry mint jam, chocolate spread, butter, milk, and yogurt.
Surprisingly, after we dropped off groceries, Sean wanted to go explore some more (scope out tomorrow’s stage start), so the rest of us hung out and snacked on gourmet treats and watched today’s stage race (Tadej won again, his excellence is losing its novelty) and then mom took a long, delicious nap in the comfy bed. This place is SO cute inside. We’ll have to take pictures tomorrow.
Jesse woke from her nap at 7:40pm and we got ready to go to dinner up on the other side of the ramparts. Mom actually made reservations in French!
It was a dreamy spot on a rooftop with a breeze. We got to watch the light change over the course of the meal, and it was dark by the time we walked home. Jesse chatted with the hostess, chef, and assistant in a mix of French, English, and Spanish (and pantomime ) for ten minutes when she paid the bill (there were very few customers left on a Monday night at 10:30). They were so friendly!
And the meal was fantastic.
River was getting sleepy, so we dropped him off first, then Sean, Jesse, and Bo went to see what Sean found on his walk. We geeked out when we found the EF and Cofidis team buses!
The temperature had dropped and the night felt wonderful. We’ve become night owls, not returning to our place until midnight.
